Maximizing Time Management at Work
Time management at work is an essential skill that far too few people use wisely. The workplace is so often the one
place in our lives that time is mismanaged more often than any other. Unfortunately, this practice drives
productivity, wages, and expectations downwards. It is also one of the primary reasons that so many companies are
finding it far more cost effective to do business in other countries. Wise companies however are 'wising up' to the
real problem at hand. By addressing the issue of time management at work, which in most cases is completely
unintentional, they are creating a much more profitable business environment.
In truth, a lack of proper time management at work probably costs companies more than sick days and vacation days
each year. The good news is that this is a problem that can be corrected. More and more companies are taking steps
to do just that. Some of the most common steps include software that tracks the Internet usage of employees. In
some ways employees feel that this is the company's method of being big brother however, from the corporate point
of view it is simply an effort at keeping employees "honest". The truth of the matter is that the company is merely
protecting the investment they are making in their employees as well as their equipment.
Some companies are even offering seminars on effective time management at work for their employees. This has
actually seen significant success in many cases with productivity levels company wide increasing as a result of
these seminars. The irony is that no matter how much money a company invests in helping their employees learn to
better manage their time it is up to the individual employee to put to action the tools they've learned about in
the seminars.
If you, as an employee, take it upon yourself to learn better methods of time management at work it is quite likely
that those efforts will be noticed. In fact, you could find that efforts in this will not only improve your
productivity but your enjoyment of your job as well. If you are constantly overwhelmed by the volume or scope of
your daily tasks it takes a toll over time. If you have proper control over your time management at work you should
find that these obstacles aren't nearly as large as they once seemed.
Some thing you can do that will improve your time management at work include the following:
1) Make your first task for the day be the task of establishing daily goals. This gives you something definite to
accomplish and a chance to congratulate yourself on a job well done. Be sure to leave room in your daily schedule
for things that will come up in the course of your day and that you keep your goals realistic but aggressive.
2) Write your goals down as well as the things you have to do. Having written goals actually holds you accountable,
particularly if you establish a timeline for those goals.
3) Set time limits on tasks and activities.
4) Hold yourself accountable to the things you put on your list.
5) Tackle the projects you dread most early in the day so that you do not find yourself creating busy work in order
to avoid them. Getting them over with allows you to approach the remainder of your day with a clear mind and not a
sense of dread.
These five things may seem so insignificant but you will be amazed at how much more effective your time management
at work is once you've implemented them into your daily routine.
