The Time Management
Process
An important thing to realize about the time management process
is that it is a process and will take some time to perfect.
Almost all of us could improve somewhat upon the way in which
we manage our time however major changes are apt to take some
time to become part of our everyday routine.
Most of us have heard at least once many of the time management
techniques that are taught at seminars to help professionals
better manage their time. Although we could all probably list
ten or twelve time management tips off the top of our heads,
implementing these habits into our daily lives is part of the
time management process.
Even if we start implementing one time management skill per
week or per month, we will soon find ourselves on the way to
achieving our goals. Budgeting time is akin to budgeting money
so for example, one of the ways that experts teach us how to
figure out where our money is going is to keep a log of every
dime spent. That means we write down every cup of coffee or
newspaper we purchase as well as the amount we spend on bills,
gas and groceries. In this way, we have a detailed record of
exactly how and where we have spent our money.
In the same way, as part of the time management process, one of
the first things time management experts teach is keeping a
time management log so that we will be keenly aware of how we
are spending our time. Even when we write down what we intend
to accomplish the following day or the following week, the time
management process shows us it doesn't always happen that way
and a lot can be learned from keeping a log.
We won't read an article or attend a seminar and suddenly be a
time management wizard the very next day. The time management
process is like any other learned behavior. It takes time and
repetition. Suppose for example, dinner time is the most
chaotic time in our household. We can learn through the time
management process what steps we need to take to make this time
less stressful and more productive. By focusing on this
particular aspect of our lives and taking the steps we need to
be successful, in a short amount of time we will have
transformed the entire dinner time experience.
Once that transformation takes place, we can then focus on
another time management process to transform and so on. That's
not to say we can only change one aspect of our time management
process at a time. While we're working on transforming the
dinner hour we can also make a list before we go to bed of what
we need to do the next day. By taking specific steps and
setting specific goals we will be able to transform any part of
our lives that needs a time management fix.
Part of this time management process will actually be fun
however some of it will be very hard work and that is when we
need to dig in our heels and work through the process. It may
take weeks or months for someone struggling to prepare things
in the evening in order to make the following morning go
smoother. We're tired, we forget or something comes up. Once
that becomes part of our regular routine though, we have
conquered that part of the time management process and we are
that much closer to the goal of running an efficient home and
an efficient home business.
Goal-setting and persistence are two of the most important
things we can practice when it comes to managing our time
wisely. The reward will be in the smooth running of our daily
lives.
