WAHM Time Management
WAHM time management can be a tricky issue. It seems simple as you are your own boss and you can work according to
your convenience. There is no boss to monitor, not many visitors (when with compared with working in an office) and
no over zealous colleague to bug you. However, there are also many disturbances while you are working at home. Some
of the WAHM time management tips would be:
1. Plan your next day today
If you know what you have to do when you sit down to work, you can avoid wasting a lot of time. Generally, people
just aimlessly check their mails or just surf when actually they should be working. Planning your day ahead will
help you increase productivity as you will not waste your time on unnecessary activities.
2. Work on high pay-off activities
It is said that 80 percent of the results can be achieved in 20 percent of the time expended. Thus, for effective
WAHM time management you need to identify the few critical activities in the overall job which, when done well,
will make a major contribution toward completion of the overall task. Conversely, try to cut down the amount of
time consumed with activities that contribute very little to the final outcome.
3. Focus attention on the smaller, individual activities
By concentrating on the smaller, individual activities, you can overcome the feeling of being overwhelmed by the
entire task. An overwhelmed feeling can easily lead to procrastination.
4. Block out an adequate length of time
This time might range from 30 minutes to an hour without interruptions. This is an effective WAHM time management
technique. Some complex projects may take ten or fifteen minutes merely to get thought processes up to their
maximum efficiency. Then it takes additional time to make progress on this aspect of the project. For similar
reasons, try to avoid getting started on a complex project just a few minutes before lunch, a meeting or quitting
time.
5. Work when you are at your best
Since we are trying to make progress on a complex task, it makes sense to work on it when one is mentally alert and
functioning well. For some people, prime time may be early morning and for some it may be late night. Avoid wasting
this peak period by working on routine tasks. Defer these non-thinking tasks, when possible to your low energy
periods during the day.
6. Start each session with something easy
Since getting started each day is sometimes the most difficult thing of all, do anything to get going rather than
nothing at all. Start a work session with something easy and don’t be surprised if your mind starts to think about
how to do some other, more complicated aspect of the project. Finish the easy activity and then shift attention to
the more involved one.
7. Redefine the project
Talk with other people in the same business to turn up suggestions for more simplified approaches to accomplishing
the same basic purpose. It is important to realize that a less ambitious project actually completed is infinitely
better than a more grandiose one that never gets off the thinking pad.
8. Control interruptions
This suggestion may be the most important for WAHM time management. Complex activities, by their very nature,
require your undivided attention in order to make progress on them. Thus, do everything possible to control
incoming telephone calls, drop-in visitors, and incoming mail during work sessions on special projects.
These are few of the tips which can be followed for effective and efficient WAHM time management.
