Work at Home Organization Techniques
Before I begin, I must tell you that work at home organization techniques generally include all common sense
things. However, for people working at home, organizing their time is important. They need to shoulder their other
household responsibilities along with maintaining their personal relationships. Thus, organizing your time can be
very helpful. Some of the work at home organization techniques can be:
You maintain two to-do lists. One called the ‘Master List’ should be kept in a notebook or a file which you carry
all the time (or have easy access to). As every assignment or tasks comes up you write it down. You can have a lot
of items on your Master List, hundreds conceivably, but this would be more than most people could deal with; they
would find it very intimidating. The way to get around this is each day you pull a few (most important) items out
and rewrite them on a ‘Daily List’, which is simply a list of some six to ten, depending on your schedule, tasks to
do that day. In other words, your Master List serves the function of sort of a reservoir from which you pull out
your day-to-day activities.
The other work at home organization technique is to avoid interruptions. To be honest, you just cannot avoid
interruptions. You will have a lot of interruptions and it is best that you are prepared for them. However, you
must have an hour or two of your time daily during which you cannot be interrupted. Some techniques to avoid
interruptions can be: if you have someone (say kids) to screen your visitors or phone calls, get them to screen
more calls. You can ask your partner to receive your calls for an hour or two while you are at work. You can do the
same while he or she is at work.
Another important work at home organization technique is to divide your time appropriately and balance your work
and family life. Finding a balance between work and family can become all the more tricky as you are working from
your home. You need to give some quality time to your family. You should be as much dedicated to your family as you
are to your work. Often, people who work at home tend to neglect their family thinking that, they anyway spend all
their time at home. Here, time spend at home should not be confused with time spent with family.
Remember; work at home organization techniques are essentially common sense. By that I mean that the basic idea of
organization in a fundamental sense is the putting together of seemingly random data into patterns. And, if a
person just goes through the steps and procedures which are basically common sense, then there is no one who can’t
be organized. A person can choose not to be organized. That is a personal choice. But, if the choice is there, then
no, you can’t be disorganized. But I must caution you that organizing is not an end in itself. There are three
things organizing is not, that people think it is. First of all, it is not being neat. Second, it is not being
perfect. It does not mean having everything in perfect degrees. Third, it’s not a moral issue. Being organized does
not make you a better human being.
Following the work at home organization techniques will just allow you to get where you want to go. The methods of
organization are the tools or, maybe more aptly, the vehicle to get there. Work at home organization techniques is
a means to an end; they are not an end in themselves.
